If you are trying to change a field context in Jira and the option is greyed out—preventing you from selecting projects or issue types—don't worry. You aren't doing anything wrong.

Jira is introducing an important change to the way fields are organized and managed. The current system, based on Field Configurations and Field Configuration Schemes, is being replaced by a simpler approach called Field Schemes.

Why does this matter?

For many teams, Jira’s field settings have become difficult to understand and maintain. The new approach is designed to reduce complexity and make it easier to ensure that teams see the information they actually need.

Field Schemes will bring related settings together, helping administrators create a cleaner and more consistent Jira experience across spaces and work types.

What should businesses do now?

  • Review outdated or unused fields.

  • Check how fields are used across teams.

  • Test the changes in a sandbox environment, where available.

  • Confirm that important third-party apps will continue to work properly.

The move to Field Schemes is an opportunity to simplify Jira, improve consistency, and make workspace management easier for everyone.

Based on announcements and guidance published by Atlassian.
